Well, the perfect situation came to pass...weather was tolerable, I had three days off, and a plan.....
Of course, I underestimated the amount of time it would take to mask the previously painted bits. Pretty much all night on Sunday the 29th, all day and into the night on both the 30th and 31st, just masking off the white and sanding a few areas that required the application of glazing putty. I must say...the hinges were a lot of fun! I needed the doors to open and close, so the hinges had to be masked with great care.
During this process I thought I was going nuts.....not only being dog-tired, and suffering from the tedium and the worries that it might become too cold and/or humid, and that I wouldn't be able to finish this phase in three days....aaaugh! .........but I made myself feel better by calling Ronnie at Old Volks Home of Arizona (www.type2parts.com) and ordering everything related to the re-assembly of this bus. It was great talking to such a friendly, enthusiastic, not to mention experienced, knowledgeable and helpful VW person...he patiently assisted me in figuring out what I needed, reminded me of things I had forgotten, and was a helluva lot of fun....I should be getting that box on Monday.....
I thought that I was "going off" and overmasking.....this was shown not to be the case! After spraying the primer/sealer and paint, I started peeling off paper and tape to find a nice haze of green on places that were not sealed on all sides. Luckily, most of it was pretty minor, and I was able to clean it off with a cloth lightly moistened with lacquer thinner.
