4-Feb-01, Sunday mid-day
Amicably zooming through the upper netherlands of California, we could not allow the thought of backtracking to enter our minds, despite the now very clear signs the the road was closed ahead. Brian mentioned that it was probably some kind of bridge wash-out situation just moments before...
No need to spell out the thousand words per picture here...except to thank the two "country" gentlemen with the large American trucks and a chain who happened to be passing through....
Brian left his engine on the whole time he was in the crick...he opened his decklid once, and we got a view of an engine compartment being showered by a pair of whirling pulleys and a fanbelt. There was a whole lotta smoke when he was pulled out, but everything seemed OK. SO! The next question...push on through, or go back and around? You guessed it...
This is the external view of me plowing through the crick...I was last to go through; we have video of the others...And here's Brian....I captured these from video...what a cool tool!
We should have gone back through to get video of the water shooting over the windshields! Aaron went through really fast, and bashed his bumper back against the nose of his bus....the license plate had folded in half and scooped up a bunch of rocks which he's probably still driving around with...
After we were all through, and had re-configured our brains for semi-normal driving, we headed off in a southwesterly direction on Lowrey Road.....
We saw Paskenta after we got to Newville Road; I'm sure Newville was noticed, but I don't remember it....maybe that was the one with the kid out front near the edge of the road with the "Deliverance" vibe...
These roads varied in quality and type. Nearly all day long, we were changing from asphalt to dirt, then to gravel, then back again.....around 4:00 p.m., we arrived in Elk Creek, where I discovered that the pump didn't have automatic shutoff, and some female person in a minivan spat (at or near) Aaron and Babs...friendly place, that...
Soon after Elk Creek, we came to the Stony Gorge Reservoir Dam, where we stopped to check out the spillway and stuff...maybe I'll take the image from the spillway water and turn it into the background for this page....
