(approx. 12:00 p.m.)
As I was saying earlier, we veered off of 162 after Covelo, and up what appears to be Mina Road, which appears to morph into Lake Mountain Road. We stopped in Kettenpom, and circled in the road near the forbidding-looking gas pump, and decided that this was the reason we brought all that extra fuel, and pushed on. We had a nice bit of tranquility up on the curve of a hilltop where the road opened into a meadow, where everyone checked their oil despite the slant.....didn't hasten to add any at that point...just wanted to make sure there was somethin' slimy in the crankcase...we'll check again later...
Also, there was some good ridgetop running, a really nasty wreck
with a cross, and a lot more of that curvy, beautiful road. This one was paved, if I
recall correctly, except for a very few spots.....
We even saw a nice "gentleman" in his pick-em-up truck with a dog in the
back who smiled and waved....I guess 'cuz we let him pass....we were good about stuff like
that the whole trip....sure doesn't pay to have angry or impatient people clogging your
arteries for you!
Somewhere on this road I developed a squeak in my shift linkage. That was almost a good enough reason to get out the tools, but upon finding how well the grease boot at the shifter base was attached, I settled for a few drops of motor oil inserted with a stick....didn't really help, but there was a lot of digging to be done if I wanted to get at my tools....for a squeak?
At 2:29p.m., 51 miles north of Covelo, we arrived at Zenia....the people there were really cool, and stoked to see us, and helped us not get lost ("You've got to go back the way y'came....then turn at....") I wish we had gone inside the store! Sure was a neat place....probably the quaintest stop of the trip...
And after checking our oil for real this time....By
the way, nobody's engines seemed to be getting hot...ever! This is judging by a
combination of Aaron's temperature gauge, the dipstick "feel" test, and a couple
"spit" tests...anyway, we got going again, went back to the turn those nice folk
in Zenia had indicated,
(Ruth-Zenia Road), and came out on Lower Westside Road by Ruth Lake, and before we got to
the Mad River Road on the other side of the lake, we were looking for a spot to perhaps
stop, brew some "Cowboy Coffee", and toss a couple lines into the lake fer some
fishin' and then....
...AHA! You'll have to go to the next page to find out....!
